Rocksolid has not only introduced a new gorgeous white granite to their portfolio but to celebrate its arrival we have decided to provide support and sponsorship to British Polar Explorer Mark Wood.
Mark recently guided Jeremy Clarkson on the Top Gear Polar Challenge and has reached the Geomagnetic Pole several times. In 2009 he will be part of a World record attempt to the North and South poles and to Everest all within a year. This Save the Poles expedition will cover Mount Everest, the South Geographic Pole and the North Geographic pole. Mark will be joining Eric Larsen on the final leg to the North Pole.
We will be able to track Mark’s adventures to find out how he has got on as Rocksolid has provided him with equipment that helps him to blog back from his adventures.
He has just returned from his latest trip to Resolute bay where he spent some time living with the Inuit community in Gris fjord, the highest settlement in the world after they had to make the very hard decision to abort their mission. The expedition was going really well up until the 5th day when his boots developed a small hole. Unfortunately this allowed ice to get next to his skin and was preventing blood circulating in the area. The two man team managed to patch the hole as much as possible with cord and padding to protect the exposed foot from getting too cold. However a further two days later they hit 20 miles of ice rubble the size of cars lining their route. This slowed them down as they had to haul themselves and equipment across the rubble. The rip in the boot got considerably worse and the slowing in speed allowed the ice to freeze his foot. It was an awful decision to have to make as at this point they had covered over 100 miles and they were set to break world records with the distance they were covering each day. They both felt fit and strong but unfortunately, sometimes events are taken out of your hands.
